This one-and-a-half-day conference will provide an international perspective on the regulatory, scientific and operational challenges surrounding asbestos management through expert insights, European comparisons and unique case studies.
Discussions will notably look back on thirty years of French asbestos regulation and examine the current challenges facing prevention policies, with insights from Thomas Colin of the French Directorate General of Labour (DGT). The programme will also explore asbestos surveying practices across Europe, highlighting shared concerns, regulatory differences and evolving approaches between countries.
A dedicated one-hour session entitled “Impact of the transposition of Directive (EU) 2023/2668 on pre-work asbestos inspections” will bring together contributions from Spain, Italy, Wallonia, the United Kingdom and France. Following a common framework designed to facilitate comparison, representatives will present their respective regulatory systems and practices regarding pre-work asbestos inspection requirements, asbestos identification, inspector competence and recognition, analytical methods and occupational exposure limits, as well as training and prevention. The session will also examine the expected impact of the Directive and draw on national testimonies and field experience to highlight the progress already achieved, the changes still required and the practical obstacles encountered across Europe.
Technical developments relating to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) will further complement the programme by addressing current analytical and operational issues for professionals in the sector.
The conference will also broaden its international perspective through a presentation by Linda Reinstein focusing on lessons learned from shortcomings in asbestos prevention, public policy and the management of the long-term health and environmental legacy of asbestos in the United States. Her contribution will include a case study on the demolition of the White House East Wing.
Finally, the issue of asbestos contamination in debris and conflict zones will be addressed through the example of Ukraine. A presentation by Martin Bjerregaard will illustrate the emerging environmental and public health challenges associated with identifying, handling and disposing of asbestos-contaminated materials in such contexts.
